Switch grass is best known by its wide open, airy seed heads.
It forms dense stands, and can be aggressive. It is commonly
used in conservation plantings.
Like other deep-rooted prairie plants, its roots help build
soil, stem erosion and filter out agricultural chemicals before
they reach waterways.

In Iowa, experiments are underway in which switch grass is
baled and burned in power plants in combination with coal to
produce electricity.
Switch grass can be located at local plant nurseries, and
is usually sold under the name "Heavy Metal." It can
be quite beautiful in a prairie garden, and provides winter interest
because it stands tall until spring.
