Smooth sumac is a native shrub that can cause problems for
the prairie restorationist due to its aggressive nature.
Sumac spreads by underground root systems, and the resulting
thickets can quickly shade out native prairie plants giving the
advantage to woody growth.
It is found in every one of the
|
lower 48 states, and its fruit is a source of food for wildlife.
In early fall, look for smooth sumac along roadsides as its
leaves turn a vibrant red.
It should be noted that the famous "Prairie Style"
architect Frank Lloyd Wright drew inspiration from sumac leaves.
Many of his art glass windows mirror this familiar leaf pattern.
