Violet Wood Sorrel

(Oxalis violacea)

The violet wood sorrel can sometimes be an indicator of an overgrazed pasture or prairie. Due to its sour taste to grazing animals, it may remain when other native plants are eliminated. Look for violet wood sorrel along the wildflower trail in late spring and early summer. The cup-like flower sits atop a stalk that is less than a foot tall . Note the heart-shaped leaves.
