Skippers

Silver-Spotted Skipper

(Epargyreus clarus)

Skippers are small, wide-bodied insects who resemble moths more than butterflies. They have club-like antennae, which are set wide apart. Remember, moths have feathery antennae.

The silver spotted skipper is the most common, living even in urban backyard gardens. It can easily be identified by the silver patch on its hind wing.

The Delaware skipper is mostly orange with black marking visible only when the wings are open. The undersides are orange without markings.

Delaware skippers are also common, and sometimes sit with their forewings held upward, looking somewhat like an F-15 fighter jet.

Both are easily found in Anderson Prairie Park.
