Red Admiral

(Vanessa atalanta)

The red admiral is a common butterfly that is found in a variety of habitats, including backyard gardens.

Note that the colorful orange markings may not be visible

when the butterfly sits with wings folded. In that position, it can be nearly impossible to tell a red admiral from the surrounding tree bark.

The red admiral is closely related to another common butterfly, the painted lady.
