Prairie phlox (Phlox pilosa )

Garden phlox (Phlox paniculata)

Wild phlox species are not too far removed from the garden phlox varieties found at local plant nurseries. In fact, garden phlox is easy to find, and it grows well. The specimen pictured above is a garden "escape" that resides in Anderson Prairie Park.

Prairie phlox was found near the end of the wildflower trail in late

spring and early summer of 2001.

Also introduced to Anderson Prairie is woodland phlox (Phlox divaricata). Woodland phlox is a spring ephemeral to be found in wooded areas before the canopy of leaves cuts off sunlight to the forest floor in late spring.
