Pasture Rose

(Rosa carolina)

Pasture rose, also known as Carolina rose, is the rose native to our area. It blooms in late spring and early summer in several places in Anderson Prairie Park. Look for it near the ground where it may be partially obscured by other vegetation. Unlike its imported relatives, pasture rose is easy to grow, and requires very little care. Tell your gardener friends that you know of a rose that tolerates heat, drought, cold and needs almost no care. Better yet, seek out this beautiful native wildflower through mail-order houses and show them yourself.

The fruit or "rose hips" are brightly colored and cherished by wildlife.
