Pale beardtongue

(Penstemon pallidus)

One hallmark of prairie wildflowers is their often understated beauty. Pale beardtongue is a perfect example as its coloration is subtle, especially if compared to its more flambuoyant relatives. Some of our native Penstemons are quite showy and vibrant. Anderson Prairie is home only to pale beardtongue.

Penstemons should be familiar to gardeners. The gardener looking to create a prairie garden that is authentic as possible should check local native plant sales or mail order outlets. Otherwise, a selection of Penstemons is available at local plant nurseries.

Look for pale beardtongue near the start of the Wildflower Trail.
