Monarch

(Danaus plexippus)

A monarch butterfly seeks nectar from prairie blazingstar at Anderson Prairie.

The monarch butterfly is the most recognized of our native butterflies. But be sure of your identification. This butterfly mimics the look of the monarch.

Its caterpillars feed on members of the milkweed family. Look for the yellow, black and white-striped caterpillars on

common milkweed and butterfly milkweed at Anderson Prairie Park.

Because monarchs are migratory, late blooming plants like asters are important late season nectar sources.
