Michigan Lily

(Lilium michiganense)

The native Michigan lily, or Turk's cap lily, can be identified by downward turned bloom and spots.

Compare the Michigan lily pictured above with the non-native Asiatic daylilies below.

The Michigan lilies at Anderson Prairie Park were rescued from a road-building project and relocated to the prairie.

Anderson Prairie is one of the few places in Christian County, Illinois where native species, like the Michigan lily remain to be enjoyed by the public.

While native lilies like the Michigan lily and wood lily are orange, they should not be confused with the orange Asiatic daylilies (above) that populate our gardens and roadsides. A note to native plant gardeners: These daylilies are often advertised as "native." Let the buyer beware.
