Little Bluestem

(Schizachyrium scoparium)

Little bluestem is the shorter cousin of prairie patriarch big bluestem.

It is usually found in drier habitats, and is often used in prairie reconstructions where extremely tall prairie plants are not desired.

Little bluestem also provides great fall color, turning to a beautiful golden tone.

Many types of skippers (relatives of butterflies) lay their eggs on little bluestem, including the Illinois state-threatened ottoe skipper.
