Lead Plant

(Amorpha canescens)

Lead plant is one of the few shrubs to make the prairie its home.

It has distinctive foliage, that when compared to other prairie plants, appears to have a gray or silver tint.

Lead plant is found in several places in Anderson Prairie Park.

Look for purple spires of flowers in June. The specimen in the photograph was captured just before its flowering cycle.

This plant is often available at native plant sales and mail order outlets. Allow a few years for it to mature and flower, however.
