Downy Gentian (Gentiana puberulenta)

Bottle Gentian (Gentiana Andrewsii)

Gentians are among the last plants to bloom in Anderson Prairie each year. Their flowers usually last despite hard frosts.

Several species of Gentians can be found in high quality prairies. The downy gentian is found in upland areas of Anderson Prairie. It is particularly noticeable along the wildflower trail.

The bottle, or closed, gentian sports flowers that appear to be buds waiting to open. Don't be

fooled, however. Bumble bees have been known to get inside the flowers to do their work. Squeezing the flower of a bottle gentian may result in a painful suprise if a bee is inside.

The bottle gentian is found in a low area just east of the main trail, about 1/4 mile south from the main entrance. They are low-growing as prairie plants go, so stay on trails to avoid trampling.
