Daisy fleabane

(Erigeron philadelphicus)

Daisy fleabane is easy to find at Anderson Prairie in late spring and early summer. Look along the main trail, and notice that it occurs in both sunny and shady locations.

It is one of the true prairie weeds. In this case, weed does not have the negative connotation of non-native and invasive garden weeds.

Weeds are fast-growing plants that fill in over-grazed areas or places that are disturbed by road building, cultivation or other means. They grow quickly, stabilizing the soil until long-lived, but slow growing prairie plants can become established.

Daisy fleabane has an ecological niche to fill, and it does it well.
