Crown beard

(Verbesina alternifolia)

In early summer, the bright yellow flower clusters of crown beard brighten Anderson Prairie. The panoramic picture below was taken along Chesnut Street. Common milkweed plants add contrasting purple to pink flowers.

Crown beard is a favorite among Anderson Prairie's goldfinches.

Notice that the flower heads crowd together at the top of a sturdy stalk.

As you can see, crown beard is abundant and widely distributed at Anderson Prairie.

Prairie gardeners should note that this plant is not widely cultivated.
