Prairie blazing star (Liatris pycnostachya)

Rough blazing star (Liatris aspera)

As you can see by the photographs, different species of blazing star have distinctly unique appearances.

Flowers bloom starting at the top of the plant and work their way down. Different species bloom at different times during the summer, with rough blazing star being a late bloomer among the Liatris genus.

Some theorize that different bloom times keep liatris species from hybridizing and thus, helps them remain distinct.

Prairie blazing star puts on a stunning show in late summer in a low, moist area at the southeast quarter of Anderson Pairie Park.

For the prairie gardener, blazing star can be found at local plant nurseries. It is often sold under the name "Gayfeather." The variety found most often is "Liatris spicata," or marsh blazing star. Due to the wide range of common names for plants, it is a good idea to check the scientific name when it is provided on the tag.
